Fresh off European Champions Cup medals, Scotland led by Jack Steen entered the 1982 Spain World Cup with high hopes. Despite a strong start to New Zealand 5–2, David Nery's early goal taught Brazil a 4–1 rout. The squad Scotland took to the 1982 World Cup in Spain was one of the most comprehensive, international veterans the country had ever seen. A host of players who have won European Cups in recent years, coach Jack Steen who understands the craft of the tournament — all come together. Gordon Strachan recalls how hard camp life was back then — rarely a phone home, no social media, and getting used to the hot weather was a big challenge. Joe Jordan, however, is ready for Spain as he recovers from a season-ending Serie A injury and gets opportunities at home internationals.
Group opener in Sevilla — Scotland 5–2 over New Zealand. Kenny Daglish's opener was soon followed by John Wark twice, then goals from John Robertson and Stevie Archibald lit up the scoreboard. But even in that scrappy display, the Scotland camp were just beginning to notice the discomfort of conceding two goals due to defensive sloppiness. Both Warke and Jordan felt strongly that — "Such gifts should not have been given; these are mistakes to be reversed" —.
Brazil in Seville for three days. In the 18th minute David Neary gave Scotland the shock with a volleyed finish. But the heat, the long grass, the Brazilian style of spinning the ball — all combined to gradually take over the match. Zico equalized with a wonderful free kick and Oscar, Ether, Falcao goals after the break — 1–4. In the words of Strachan, who recalled that day, "Not only was their midfield, but their physicality was enormous; they were knocked down on a collision course." Another memory of that night for John Wark — the players' post-match scramble for Zico's jersey, the number 10 jersey that eventually came to him; Later it was given in a charity auction and a good sum was collected.
Final match against USSR in Malaga. It was Joe Jordan's first start of the tournament — and his last cap. His accurate finish gave Scotland the lead in the 15th minute. In the second half, however, luck ran out; Chivadze's ball hit the ground and flew strangely into the goal, and eventually a Miller–Hanson miscommunication between Shengelia's goal — 1–2 behind. Already the raids of Scotland came in a flood; Graeme Souness equalized in the 86th minute but it ended 2–2. It's the same when Wark looks back — "We could have won the game three times; but the flurry of goals cost us."
All in all, a top-quality team, a great coach — despite all, minor defensive lapses and a display of contrasting quality at key moments — combined to halt Scotland's campaign. A flying start against New Zealand, the momentary joy of a close goal, the lesson learned before Brazil's glory, the missed opportunities against the USSR — the summer of 1982 is still vividly remembered by Jordan, Strachan and Wark today.
