Back at Brandywell, Derry City beat Drogheda 2-0
Derry City returned to Brandywell Stadium to beat Drogheda 2-0 thanks to a first half-hour goal from Cameron Dummigan and a full-time injury time goal from Adam O'Reilly. It was Derry's sixth league win of the season; Their position continued as sixth.
Derry City returned to their home ground at the Brandywell Stadium with a 2-0 win over Drogheda United. The team, led by coach Tiernan Lynch, have been playing their home matches at Derry GAA's Celtic Park since late April until a new grass-hybrid pitch is installed at Brandywell. Back to Brandywell tomorrow comes a confident win.
The first goal of the match came in the 28th minute. Team captain James McClean's corner kick was cleared out of the area; From there Cameron Dummigan took a touch and curled the ball brilliantly into the top corner. Both teams failed to press each other hard in terms of chances in the first half, but Dummigan's goal revived the home side's lead.
While the conflict on the match was intense, new goal chances were rare in normal time. Yet Derry sealed the match in injury time: Michael Duffy raced into the area to collect a through ball from Brandon Fleming and Adam O'Reilly pounced on the home captain's pass.
The win gave Derry City their sixth league win of the season and brought some relief to their situation in the points table — Derry currently sit sixth in the table. Drogheda United remain in eighth place, seven points adrift of Derry, but they have a chance to play as they have two games to play against Derry.
There were also some key results in the rest of Friday's fixtures on the football side: League leaders Shamrock Rovers beat Galway United 3-1. Waterford came from behind with a 3-2 win over Dundalk, and Bohemians beat St Patrick's Athletic 2-0.
