Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser Al-Mishhal resigns
Football Federation President Yasser Al-Mishhal resigned after Saudi Arabia failed to perform successfully in the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage.
Yasser Al-Mishal, president of the Football Federation, which has been involved in the development of domestic football, announced on Monday that he will step down after the Saudi Arabian team's performance in the FIFA World Cup 2026 did not go up to expectations.
"We—myself and our team of directors—have worked hard for the development of Saudi football. We have worked hard to take the team to the level the country and the fans want. But, the team's failure to reach the next stage after the World Cup has disappointed the fans. I take full responsibility and apologize in front of everyone," Al-Mishal said on his social media platform.
He said in the statement that the current board of directors will not continue in office before the term expires and the process of electing a new chairman will begin soon. He made it clear that even if he steps down from his position, he will always contribute to the development of the country's football and his love will continue.
In the group stage of the World Cup, the Saudi Arabian team managed to score only two points and finished in the last place. So it could not reach the knockout stage.
