Pros, cons on the new format of the 2026 World Cup: Russian Football Union president Dyukov's analysis
Russian Football Union President Alexander Dyukov explained the pros and cons of the expanded format (48 teams, 32 per play-off) of FIFA World Cup 2026. He said that while the increase in revenue and opportunities to participate is a plus, the physical pressure on the players due to the increase in the number of matches is a minus.
FIFA World Cup 2026 has introduced an expanded format: a total of 48 teams in the final stage, with 32 teams making it to the play-offs. Alexander Dyukov, president of the Russian Football Union, expressed his opinion on this new model.
In Dyukov's words, it is too early to make a definitive judgment. "The real assessment should be done after the tournament. It is clear why this decision was taken — one of the main reasons is to increase FIFA's income. This has been supported by many football federations and associations. On the one hand, it will increase their chances of participating in this great tournament; on the other hand, through the increased income, financial support from FIFA can reach the national associations that do not play in the World Cup," he commented.
But Dyukov pointed out that there are also flaws. He warned that the teams going far in the tournament will have to play more matches which will put extra burden on the players. "Players are playing many matches in a full season; this increases the physical pressure. Not only tactical and technical preparation, but also fitness becomes decisive. Whoever has better physical preparation will have an upper hand," said Dyukov.
These comments were made by Dyukov in a conversation with the representative of "Championat" publication Ilya Nikulnikov. He made it clear that a comprehensive assessment of the new format should be undertaken only after the tournament is over.
